The Future of Music Royalty Payouts

Musicians - imagine being paid immediately every time your work is streamed. Kind of like a micropayment version of PayPal where funds hit your account in real time. Thanks to "smart contracts" - which use an encrypted ledger - and blockchain technology, this might soon be a reality. Simply put, the ledger (which assigns credits and royalty splits) is defined when the work is created. For independent artists, this ledger might only list one person. When the work is consumed, payouts would flow directly from the consumer to those on the ledger, cutting out several layers of middle men. It's one more example of how the traditional label-artist relationship is unnecessary today. It also encourages FAIR payment to creators. Intriguing stuff!
