In May 2017, Roberto released his debut album, titled BEIN’ GREEN, dedicated to his home island of Sardinia, in Italy. This groundbreaking project features well known international guest stars Bob Mintzer (Yellowjackets), Najee, Bill McGee, Bill Sharpe and Jill Saward (Shakatak) and Tim Collins.
Roberto Tola was born and raised in Sardinia Island, Sassari (Italy) and began studying music when he was just six years old. In 1976 he studied cello in the Conservatory of Music in Sassari. Four years later he continued his studies of Modern and Jazz Guitar and established a sextet named JAZZMANIA. For this band, Mr. Tola composed and arranged all of the music collected on the Album “Preludio” in 1985. From 1989 to 1991, Roberto was a member of the Italian Jazz Big Band “Blue Note Orchestra”, and from 1991 to 2012 he was the official guitarist of the “Orchestra Jazz della Sardegna” (Sardinia Jazz Orchestra), conducted by well known musicians Carla Bley, Bob Mintzer, Colin Towns, Giorgio Gaslini, Bruno Tommaso, Giancarlo Gazzani and others.
Roberto has played in many famous Jazz Festivals and in a long list of concerts in Italy, Europe and the far east. In 2005 he was the conductor of the big orchestra for the National Competition “Canzonissima 2000” which included 26 musicians and a big band with strings - which he wrote music for.
In his 30 year career, Roberto has performed with some of the best musicians of the genre, such as conductors Colin Towns, Carla Bley, Giorgio Gaslini, Giancarlo Gazzani, Bruno Tommaso, Mario Raja, Marco Tiso e Roberto Pregadio; the famous singers Jill Saward, Norma Winstone, Maria Pia De Vito, David Linx and Gegè Telesforo. The trumpetists Tom Harrell, Paolo Fresu, Enrico Rava, Flavio Boltro, Giovanni Amato; great Bassist Steve Swallow, Saxes Bob Mintzer (member of Yellowjackets), Andy Sheppard, Javier Girotto, Maurizio Giammarco, Pietro Tonolo; clarinet Paolo Ravaglia; pianists Riccardo Zegna and Gerardo di Lella, accordionist and pianist Antonello Salis, the French accordionist Richard Galliano and others. Roberto has been teaching music, modern and jazz guitar in many music schools for more than 25 years.
Recently, Roberto collaborated for the recording of CD album “On The Corner” by the famous and legendary English jazz-funk band Shakatak, and also with the English singer Jill Saward in her last CD album “Endless Summer” and the single “M is for Manhattan”, both released in June 2016.
